Some Common Scoliosis Myths:

  • Hereditary If my mom has scoliosis, I will have scoliosis. This is an untrue statement.  There is no research that shows a genetic predisposition to scoliosis in a family unit.
  • My Child is Checked at School An outdated way to check scoliosis and it is inaccurate. The most accurate way to is to have a complete Scoliosis evaluation with x-rays of the spine, including the pelvis, lumbar, thoracic and cervical spinal regions.
  • Wait and See Attitude Medical professionals will want to wait and see what happens with a scoliosis. A scoliosis will not reshape or correct itself on it’s own.  The curvature can and will worsen on average 1 degree a year, depending on the patient and the severity of the condition.  Left untreated the scoliosis does not stay static, it worsens.
  • Bracing and Surgery With the progression of a scoliosis, bracing is an option that will be presented. The stigma, uncomfortable nature and restriction that a brace has, the process also does not have long-term solution.  Certain bracing can require to be worn for 12 to 23 hours a day for years.
